I need some help. After putting some feelers out to see if Oakley UK were planning on doing another collector event they have asked me to get some ideas of what people might want to do or see if they put one on.
So I thought id ask you guys on here to see what you thought as I know some of you have shown or been to other collector events around the world to see what worked what didn't work things like that.
Some of the feed back I've had already on facebook is last time there wasn't enough notice to get time off work or get organised with there collections. Some would of liked a different venue due to travel arrangements.
Personally I'd like to see the rolling O lab set up. id also like to see a special guest there. Oakley sponsored athlete or some event for when a major glasses release is due.
I think an after closing "lock in" for us would be great, 50% off shopping spree! Then have a few beers and discuss everything O, get a sneak peek into new products etc. Maybe some sort of giveaways would be nice. After all most of us have spend thousands over the years and we are the back bone of Oakley, without us there would be no need for all the limited edition models as most people would turn away from the prices! Many of the athletes are given loads of products to try, why can't the average man on the street get some freebies to show off, we are collectively advertising Oakley on a daily basis! How many people ask about your glasses or what watch your pimping, a lot of people don't even know Oakley make watches!
Anyway rant over! Just being around fellow O lovers is cool, a healthy discount would be great though! And also plenty of notice to get organised...
I never got to go to mine due to weather, but I helped play a role in the initial announcements and such. Some of the issues were location, since if you're going to bring any sizable collection, you need adequate parking and for it to be in an easy to access area. But since they weren't going to rent a non O Store location just for the event, they had to pick the ones that could hold the needed amount of people.
The awards almost felt like popularity contests at times, and the rules weren't really enforced. I would have preferred an Oakley panel of judges. Forfeiting awards altogether would even be nice since then it's just about show & tell.
On the plus sides, I liked how they brought in designers. I suppose athletes would be a plus, but they probably are on time sensitive schedules, and cost more than a plane ticket out there. I enjoy hearing from those who have a direct hand in the process at Oakley, but if they can get some public figures, that would be cool too.
Seeing the next wave of products early is a big plus. It's hard to pull off since most get leaked so early now, that by the time the official release hits, it's not really new. Although we did see the Torch Inferno and Windjacket 2.0 show up at the recent sales summit, so in theory it is possible.
For me, the main thing would be a chance to mingle with other collectors. Event draw more people than home brewed attempts, so it's a chance to get quite a few people chatting.
i always liked a dedicated photographer to document the event for memories and for others who couldn't be at the event to see how/what was there.
For the collectors who brought stuff there was always gift cards given to the people to say thank you for hauling all of their pieces for others to see
I agree with Dann the awards seemed to be who the popular or well known people are unless it was dedicated unbiased judges but keep the people element out of it.
I would love to come with my whole colection of retro stuff but its the idea of bringing it all into central London that worries me.. Surely there is an alternative that still has the support of Oakley UK..?
